Maui and Ra

Once upon a time the burning hot sun was travelling over Aotearoa, but Maui and his brothers didn’t have time to eat, hunt or fish.

Suddenly Maui had an idea, we will catch the sun so we could have lots of time. The brothers laughed at Maui. “We can’t catch the sun,” they said. Maui said, “Yes we can, we can catch the flaming sun with our strong ropes!”

Maui and his brave brothers hid behind the enormous rocks. As the sun was going down Maui jumped out and caught the sun with his silvery flax ropes. Pulling very tightly to make it slow down.

The Ra shouted out, “You are going to defeat me, I am going to die.” Maui and his brothers pulled hard on the long ropes. Now the flaming sun slowed down, so they could hunt and fish in the daylight.

Class 15 retold the story of Maui and the Sun.
